I won’t lie to you; I love pleasing and aesthetically beautiful photographs, and that is why I spend a lot of time on Pinterest. I also enjoy making Pins to go along with my blog post, and the primary tool I use is Canva. I also use Photoshop from time to time because I still find Canva pretty limited on certain things, especially if my needs involves special techniques to achieve what I envisioned how my pin should look. In this Pinterest guide, I will show you how I make my Pins look aesthetically beautiful and eye catching, as well how I developed a style which other pinners will eventually recognize whenever they browse feeds for inspiration that that pin is mine!

There’s no recipe on how you should create your pin. However, there are ways to make it beautiful which you can follow all the time to get great results. Sure, there are few things to remember while creating a pin but the most important aspect is that you should also have fun while doing it!
Pinterest plays a big part in the blogging world as it became one source of referral traffic to a lot of bloggers and the best part is that Pinterest can give you consistent page views over time, unlike Twitter and Facebook. The latter two only gives you certain traffic at certain times when you share your posts, which gradually fades after few hours to a couple of days when your post eventually get buried by other people’s posts. That is also why it is essential for Facebook and Twitter (or other platforms) to update as much as possible.
The note mentioned above brings us to one important note you should remember about Pinterest is that it is more like a social media slash search engine, and works similarly like Google. Sure, Pinterest is a social media platform like any others, but honestly, do you use Pinterest as a platform to connect with your friends? Not really, right? It is a place where you search for inspiration, a place where you try to find other people’s pins to cater your needs.
It is a good place to find certain things you are looking for, which makes Pinterest a great platform to discover new ideas, new bloggers, and great tips! And that is why a lot of us bloggers are using Pinterest to our advantage because it is a great place for other people to discover us.
Pinterest can direct future loyal readers to your blogs! That’s why it is vital to have great looking pins to share on that platform so that people will notice you.
That is also the reason why I am sharing these little creative tips on how to make beautiful pins to go along with your blog post! Therefore you can also have the opportunity to get referral traffic and loyal readers from Pinterest.

A Pinterest Guide: The art of creating beautiful travel pins using Canva
A quick note to remember about how important it is to have good image graphics if you’re a travel blogger; People’s attention span is getting shorter day in, day out therefore one way to catch that span is to create graphics that will attract them!
HOW TO USE CANVA: GENERAL OVERVIEW OF ITS TOOLS AND PROPERTIES
First of all, Canva is an image editing tool which is easily accessible via your browser; its components is quite similar to any image editing program – only it is easier to use. It works on a ‘drag-and-drop’ way which makes it a bliss to use.
➳ Here’s Canva’s overall layout to have an idea how it looks like:
If you log in to your Canva account, the first thing you’ll see is your profiles ‘homepage.’ And if you click ‘Create design‘ it will redirect you to another page that will give you many template options, in there you’ll choose Pinterest Graphics, and it already have the proper image size proportion which Pinterest requires (735 x 1102 px)
On the left-hand corner, you’ll see the tools you can use to create the pin however you want.
- The Layout is where you’ll find some of Canva’s layout designs which you can use as a guideline; it is good to check this one out from time to time if you need inspiration for most of the pins in here are made to be aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.
- The Elements section is where you’ll find different tools you can use to create beautiful pins. In there you can find the options to create add frames, shapes, lines, illustrations, icons, charts, and grids to section your pin.
- The Text section is where you can add text to your Pinterest graphics. Also, they provide already made text layouts for you to use when you want.
- The Background section is where you can add a beautiful background for your Pinterest graphics or only change the color.
- The Upload section is where you can upload your images from your computer or your Facebook profile.
These are the essential tools of what you’ll need if you’re going to use Canva. It is quite easy to navigate and pretty straightforward, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to learn how to use it.
BASIC INFORMATION YOU SHOULD HAVE IN YOUR PINS
It is quite vital to give so much information in few words. To start, it is not easy to come up with proper keywords to use that would describe what your blog post is all about and then use the same keywords for your pins! However, it is not impossible.
What I normally do (and what I noticed a lot of other people do as well) is that I always make sure to use high-quality image(s) that is relevant to my post’s topic and then I use my blog post’s title as a heading for my pin. Sometimes I also use subheading just to highlight briefly what the post is all about! Lastly, your brand logo or your blog’s URL.
➳ Here are few examples of how you can add those three in a pin without giving too much information or text crowding your pin!
So here’s three things you should always remember to add in your pin:
- A heading (i.e., your blog post title)
- A subheading by using few words to highlight what your blog is all about
- Your brand logo or blog URL
EYE-CATCHING PINTEREST GRAPHIC EXAMPLES
Here are examples of the Pins I’ve done as of recently. I’ve finally decided that my style would be minimalistic, easy to read and straight to the point. No fuss, just business. In time you’ll also figure out what sort of style you want to have and will eventually develop a pin pattern which you’d be proud. In the beginning, I always suggest to have fun and play around Canva until you’re comfortable using it!
Personally, I really like my graphics clean and as minimalistic as possible with clear and strong edges. I’m not a big fan of cursives or script typeface and almost always uses Sans typeface on my headings. Some may find my style boring; some may find it pleasing to the eyes for excluding all the other mambo jumbo. However, I also found other bloggers who use colors and make their pins funky and beautiful! Your style always what matters the most! Like what I mentioned above, there’s no recipe on how to make a pin, just envision your design and do it (remembering few guidelines, of course!).
Here are examples of other travel bloggers who uses funky designs on their pins:
The bloggers mentioned below falls under the travel blogging niche, however, all of them have different styles and blogs about a more specific travel category hence you can see how they all apply their own style in their Pinterest graphics.
➳ Don’t Forget to Move – Their pins are easy to read, straight to the point, and they use different fonts to make their images look more fun.
➳ Travel Pockets – They have a pin layout which you will immediately notice as it stands out from the rest!
➳ I am Aileen – Aileen base her graphics on the photograph and as well the content of where the pin redirects you.
➳ There are several ways you can layout your image in a pin, here are three options:
Option 1: One photo
This is the option I use most of the time. I usually fill the background with a picture related to my blog post topic, and that’s it. Easy and fuss free!
Note: Make sure to use only high-quality photos to avoid pixelated image!
Option 2: Use grids to layout several photos in a pin
I used this option several times for other posts. I’m not sure why but I am not exactly a big fan of overcrowding one pin with tons of photos although on some topics, I don’t mind doing it.
Note: Make sure to use images that compliments each other!
Option 3: No photo at all or using stock photos
Some bloggers, especially those who blog about marketing, uses their brand’s chosen color as the pin’s background with big fonts and a link to their pages. Some also use a background photo with solid block overlay where they insert their headings, subheadings, and URL. For example, Anna of Digital Drive with Anna is an SEO blogger uses the latter technique for her pins.
Note: Make sure you comply with the photographs copyright law before using it. Canva has a huge range of stock photo’s you can use, and they are beautiful!
Again, it is up to you how you envision your pin should be! By following these guidelines, you can always make sure that you pins will look pleasing in the eyes.
You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t realize how to use fonts properly when it comes to graphic design. I, for one, was the same in the beginning. I did not realize that some fonts do not compliment each other until one day I asked a friend of mine who is a graphic designer to quickly browse my website and return to me with his honest feedback regarding my website’s design.
Here’re few pointers he told me:
- You should not use more than three fonts anywhere, including on images.
- You should find out which fonts compliment each other!
- There’s Sans, Serif, Monospace, and Script. These four are the font groups which are used in Canva. And not all of them compliments each other!
➳ So, you must be wondering what these font groups are and here’s my best explanation of what they are:
- Sans – the most common font group which everyone uses, it has high readable ability and is mostly used in headings. The best example for this is the font called Arial.
- Serif – the best example for this is Times New Roman, so Serif covers pretty much all the old style fonts (talk about the fonts used in the ’90!)
- Monospace – the best way to explain this is the font called Courier. It is non-proportional and the spacings have different widths. Also, a typewriter have monospace typeface!
- Script – this is the other word used for cursive letters. So, all cursive fonts are scripts!
Normally what I’d do is see which fonts look great with each other, just eyeball it. However, not all fonts look pretty with each other. So, how do you determine which fonts to use for your Pinterest Graphics? I would say Google it but really, I’m not that lazy, and I’m just starting to get the groove writing this article! Because I’m nice and I have the motivation to create a graphic, here’s a chart of some font combinations you can take reference from:
These fonts are all available in Canva if ever you wonder. These are just a few out of thousand combinations you can use! If you don’t find your style in the example above, there’re tons of other examples in Pinterest if you search from there. You’d be amazed at how a simple font combination can do to your pins!
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO USE CANVA TO CREATE PINTEREST GRAPHIC
Step 1: Create a Canva account (or log in)
If you haven’t created Canva yet the I highly suggest you to do so before proceeding on this guide. It is easy to follow, and you can even sign up using your Facebook account.
Step 2: Choose ‘Create design’ and click on ‘Pinterest Graphics.’
There are other layout graphic options in Canva and I use it more than just for Pinterest Graphics. I also use it exclusively to create Facebook graphics and as well Twitter graphics. They have the layouts for each social media platform, with its required graphic dimensions.
Step 3: Design your Pins
NOTE: Please refer to the first guide above how to navigate all the tools in Canva!
Okay, creating your pins! It is very easy but first you have to check out these few aspects before creating your pins:
- High-quality image
- You have to remember that Pinterest is very visual, and people will most likely pin your image if it has a high-quality photograph!
- Avoid faces, if possible. There’s a statistic that proves that Pins with no faces is more likely to be repinned than if it has a visible person’s face in it. Of course, if you want a photograph with a face in it, it’s up to you!
- Image relevance to your blog post
- When choosing a photo to use in your pins make sure that it is relevant to your blog post (i.e., if you’re post is about Malta and Gozo, make sure the image you use for your pin is from Malta and Gozo)
- The image you use in your pins is like giving a teaser to other users about what they will expect if they visit your blog through Pinterest. So, if the link directs them to an article about Bankok when the image in your Pin is from Paris, it doesn’t make sense, right?
- Headings and subheadings
- Headings for your title (i.e., the blog posts title)
- The subheading is not exactly necessary, but I’ve seen popular pins that have this. They put subheadings to highlight the articles main points.
- Logo or website URL
- I personally only started adding my URL in my pins, and it sure did made a positive impact on my blog.
- Consider this as brand marketing. You have to brand yourself well for people to recognize you.
- Also, your pins will get lost eventually in other people’s feed, and one way for new pinners to see where the pin originally came from is through your logo or URL.
Now that you have the basic things you need to put in a pin, you can go knock yourself out designing your Pin!
Step 4: Download your Pin and voila
- The downloading part is easy as it is just click, click, and boom, done and dusted. However, you have to make sure that you download it on high-quality png file and rename the image accordingly (i.e., add your keyword as the image file name)
HOW TO PROPERLY LAYOUT PINS FOR BLOG POSTS
Now that we have covered the basics on how you can create a beautiful, eye-pleasing pins using Canva without overwhelming viewers with cluttered pins, we are now going to cover how you can layout your pin in your blog post! That’s why we created it in the first place, right?
So, after you have downloaded your Pinterest graphics from Canva, here are few things to remember:
- Make sure you download the high-quality png file!
- Change the Pinterest graphic’s image file name after your blog post title or just simply change it to whatever your blog post keyword is.
- Set your image to link to media file (Add Media > Click photo > right-hand side)
- By doing this, your pin would be at its proper dimension when shared to Pinterest.
- When you finally uploaded it to WordPress or your blog:
- Copy the image’s file name and paste it to the picture’s title and alt text box.
- Add a short description of what the blog post is all about AND add a call to action!
Why is it important to have a call to action in your pins? Simple, if you don’t ask people what to do, they will not respond to it! Therefore it is important to have CTA in your pin’s description. The easiest way to do this is to add it directly in your blog’s image attachment details (Add Media > Click photo > right-hand side > add CTA to description). By doing this, anyone who pin your image from your blog, it will carry the description to Pinterest (you have to verify your website first though).
FACEBOOK PINTEREST GROUPS AND RECIPROCAL THREADS
So now you have your beautiful Pinterest graphic to go with your blog post! Hurray! So remember that the first thing you do when you publish your post is re-pin that photo to your own blog’s Pinterest Board!
Now, this is the part where you need to work a little bit more, and that is to share your pins to several Facebook Groups so that other people will re-pin it to their boards!
Be wary though that these groups have rules and guidelines you need to follow. Also, all of these groups are hosting reciprocal threads so do remember to reciprocate whenever you join, it should be a fair game and you should be a team player.

I always join the threads from this group every single week and especially if I have a new blog post that needs re-pinning! On average I get about 80-120 re-pins just from joining these threads, so it is a big help to those who are just starting out their Pinterest game.
If you don’t want to overwhelm your followers with tons of re-pins then I suggest you to sign up for tailwind or boardbooster (I use the latter) to schedule your pins and as well to keep your Pinterest account active everyday and as well to increase your followers/re-pins from other people! Plus, Pinterest alogrithm freaking loves active accounts.
Also, before I end this Pinterest guide, make sure to be an active member of these groups and if you want your Pins to be re-pinned even more then I suggest joining more than once a week or create one or two more pins for each blog post… anyway, the more the better! And do not forget to have fun creating pins!
