Malta & Gozo. We decided that it is time to have a holiday together; my partner and I have been together for a year and a half by then, and we were so excited to have our first out of the country! We made a lot of side trips to Estonia before that, but it is just not as exciting for him since he is from there and I’ve been to Estonia several times. Here’s our Malta and Gozo travel experience!

Malta and Gozo Travel Experience
Our trip to Malta was our first trip together, and it was just a complete flashpacking experience. We did not intend to be cheap while we were there and we opted to have an excellent time. At that point it was around March, and it was almost spring here in Finland, and it sure was freezing, Malta at that time had perfect weather for us, the northerners. It was hot enough, the wind was a tad cold, and the sun is kissing your skin that burns slightly but not too much. For us that was perfect. We couldn’t complain because we got what we wished for.
It was an exciting moment, and it was even more exciting since we got the tickets from Helsinki to Malta at such a low price. We were researching for several hours till we finally found a good priced connecting flight that goes from Helsinki to Stockholm and then to Malta. It was cheap all right; we paid 120€ each, and it was a damn good deal considering the season.
However, not all cheap things are good. Sometimes chipping in extra cash will give you the utmost value for your money. I am not saying that we paid for something shitty; it was just for the flights after all. Norwegian is a great budget airline in my opinion, and their service is excellent, not perfect, but good. They offer low prices for many destinations, and they certainly have a word right alongside their campaign.
Our flights between Helsinki and Stockholm were right, and on time, however, our flights with Ryan air between Stockholm and Malta was just a bit… Well, an experience. It was a funny disaster really; nothing awful has happened I assure you.
Anyway, back to our Malta and Gozo travel experience. After the flights, we were looking for hostels or hotels, but they do not come cheap in Malta, they were quite a bit pricey, so we thought of checking out apartments, and to our surprise, they come much cheaper than hotels!
We booked an apartment with a kitchenette around Bugibba, about 17km north from Valetta. On the day we arrived, we were supposed to be picked up since we arrived late and thought it’d just be a little smarter to shed in a little extra cash for the pickup. Our ride didn’t come. Apparently, there was a misunderstanding through email and well; they just thought we’d manage from there on.
Nevertheless, I must say there are some nice design luxury hotels in Malta that is still worth booking. Maybe on our next trip we’ll treat ourselves with something fancy.
We ended up taking a taxi for 20€, which was a lot really but whatever, and when we arrived at our apartment, there was a huge party going on, and Maltese people sure do know very well how to party.
It looked so lively, happy and fun! It was a wedding, and it was the owner’s cousin or something that got wed that day. The owner welcomed us at the front gate and gave us some wines during our check-in, and I must say, that was not a bad start for a holiday. After checking in, we just went out for dinner, grabbed drinks and rested back in our apartment for a rest.
If you ask me, Malta is such a beautiful country with tons of places to see and a culture so mixed and diverse that everything and everyone seemed to be so interesting. The water is an absolute treat as well when we visited the blue lagoon I just thought it was the most beautiful thing I ever saw in my life! The water was calm and so clear and so clean.
Nature was amazing as well and the food, oh, don’t even get me started about the food! It was just superb. Their fresh goods were amazing. We had such a great time, and I wish to go back one day. I had nothing but a great experience while we were there. Oh, and the best part are the British expats who decided to retire in Malta, so funny folks. There was this one bar where we hang out almost every night, and usually, there are tons of retired Brits in there just hanging out, playing guitar and singing. Amazing.
If ever at some point in your life and you got the chance to visit Malta & Gozo, I highly suggest that you should. It is an amazing country with amazing people in it! And thanks for reading our Malta and Gozo travel experience!
MALTA & GOZO
Malta has been marvelous to me and my partner and if given a chance I would go back to visit again but perhaps during summertime to really feel the heat. Somehow, even though spring was warm enough, the water was too cold for us to swim. In conclusion, Malta and Gozo is a special treat to those who would like to have a quaint holiday.
