People of Today is all about inspiring individuals who are making a difference to this world in their own ways. I am more than happy to introduce to you all yet another amazing power couple who has been travelling the world and fullfiling their dreams!
I’ve known about TwoMonkeysTraveGroup for nearly a year now and they truly inspired me a lot. I’ve followed them from beginning when their blog was still a baby and through its success that it is now. Kach and Jon are two individuals who are together making a huge difference when it comes to being a digital nomad. From their website alone you’ll find out all amazing tips and tricks given freely to the public and all are from their own personal experience. Here’s my interview about the monkeys who has helped and inspired me a lot.
» Hi TwoMonkeysTravel! First of all thank you for being here to be my guest on this month’s ‘People of Today’ series. Your website twomonkeystravelgroup.com is very informative and inspiring, how did it all began?
It all started when we were sitting in a cafe in Calcutta, India, waiting for our train to Darjeeling. We started to realise that we had quite a few stories to tell and decided to revive Kach’s old Blogger account! The name came from our first motorbike trip together in North Vietnam, where the young Vietnamese kids pointed at me and laughed, chanting ‘WHITE MONKEY!’ over and over in Vietnamese. (Us English folk have quite hairy arms!) And so, Two Monkeys Travel was born!
» You guys worked so hard to achieve where you are right now. Can you tell me what drove you guys to be this determined and inspired?
We have always been fairly clear about what we want, even if we weren’t exactly sure of how to get it. We want a sustainable life of travel, without compromising our future, our success and our long-term dreams. As Two Monkeys Travel started to gain more readers, we realised that the website was the perfect way to share what we had learned with other people who want to travel long term, but aren’t sure how to start.
» You guys are currently staying in South America and have been there for quite a while. Don’t you miss home by any chance?
Home has been a flexible concept for both of us since before we met, so we’re used to settling down in new places. I still like to go back and see friends and visit favourite places, but the novelty soon wears off and then it’s time to leave again.
» If yes, what is it that both of you miss so much from home? (Could be food, place or people)
To be honest, I only miss my grandparents but I can’t wait to go back to the Philippines to show Jonathan around the country. Maybe I just got used to living abroad, I left the Philippines in 2009 to work in the Middle East and I rarely go home for vacation.
» Please tell me one awesome experience you guys had during your travels?
Our favourite is still hitchhiking the Carretera Austral in Patagonia de Chile. We met so many incredible people and travelled in every type of transport imaginable, from off-duty buses, to pickup trucks, giant lorries and flat beds.
» Do you guys have any plans on how long do you usually stay in one place or do you just go with the flow and leave when you feel like it?
We usually have a rough idea, but part of the lifestyle is to be prepared to jump up and grab opportunities as they arise. We thought that we’d be living in Arequipa for 18 months to 2 years, but we were offered the chance to cover the Envision Costa Rica festival, so we packed our things and flew!
» I know you guys have been planning your trip to Antarctica a long while already. Is there anything you expect so much to see in there?
A lot of ICE and Penguins?! Mostly, it’s because we see Antarctica as one of the final great frontiers. It’s also the cleanest continent on Earth!
» This will be a tough question, name three (3) unique places you guys have been during your travels?
Patagonia de Chile / Varanasi, India / Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica
» Travel blogging, as it seems, is not an easy feat. A lot of competition and definitely a lot more promising ones are coming. Is there anything you want to advice to future travel bloggers who wish to be successful in this business?
A successful travel blog really all revolves around finding the right balance of doing what you love and finding the right way to tell other people about it. It has to be about what you love, or there’ll be no passion and both you and your readers will lose interest. And don’t forget, most bloggers give up within six months, when it can take 1 to two years to start to grow your audience and establish yourself out there. Stick with, don’t give up!
» Is there anything you guys wish to tell the younger (or any) generations about the life you are living now and how can you inspire them to try and explore the same way?
It’s not as simple as a lot of blogs and ‘inspiring quotes’ pictures on Facebook make it out to be – Long-term travel rakes planning. But don’t let fear or anxiety stop you, just take it one step at a time and arm yourself with a set of skills that can help you earn a living anywhere in the world.
» It is definitely great having you guys in here, Kach and Jon! More power to you both and to your blog and hope to one-day bump each other on the endless roads of this pretty, wild world! Cheers!
Thanks s much for having us, hope to meet you in person one day!
