I’ve flown long distances so many times I can’t even count it. I always make sure to prioritize comfort over anything else and as well keep essential items in my carry-on bag for easy access.

I also tend to bring a few extra knick-knacks to keep me entertained on any flight, and one of my ultimate plane hacks is to always bring snacks with you.

That said, next time you’re preparing for a long flight, I have plenty more hacks in this post you can keep in mind for your next trip!

12 Plane Hacks That Could Transform Your Flying Experience

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes

When traveling by plane, it’s important to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, which will help make your journey more comfortable and enjoyable.

If you’re traveling in the summertime, it’s a good idea to wear light clothing that won’t make you too warm. And if you’re flying during the winter, it’s a good idea to wear a coat or jacket to keep warm.

It’s also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes, and this will help prevent foot pain and other problems. If you’re going to be walking around the airport, wear shoes that are easy to walk in.

I wear loose jeans or pants, a loose shirt, a jumper, and walking shoes. I’ve flown long distances many times, and this outfit combo has been my go-to for years.

Always opt for comfort when flying, especially on a long-haul flight.

Bring an eye mask for more sleeping comfort

An eye mask is a great item to bring when flying; it can help block out light and keep you comfortable. Additionally, it can help you get some rest if you’re trying to sleep on the plane.

I personally always bring an eye mask with me on any flight, regardless if it is a short or long haul. I sleep pretty easily on the plane, and sometimes it is so bright inside that I wake up every few minutes.

So, having an eye mask in my carry-on is pretty essential. It is so tiny that you won’t even notice its existence until you need and know you have one.

Pack light – only bring the essentials, so you don’t have to struggle with your luggage on board

One of my important plane hacks is the packing light. When you’re trying to navigate a plane and its aisles with a large suitcase, it can be not easy and can even lead to missed flights.

Packing light also makes it easier to get through security, and it’s less stress on your back and shoulders when carrying your luggage through the airport.

One example I encountered was recently when I was flying back to Helsinki from London, carrying a huge carry-on luggage, which was so heavy I had to ask for help to get it over the overhead compartment.

At that moment, I asked myself, why can’t I bring the stuff I need on board and leave everything else in my check-in luggage?

Because the truth is told, I didn’t even, not even once, touch anything that I put in that carry-on luggage.

Plus, most airline ticket prices nowadays only allow you to bring a carry-on handbag, so it’s important to pack light to avoid airport charges.

Invest in noise-canceling headphones for a comfortable flight

Noise-canceling earphones can be a lifesaver on a long plane ride. If you’re trying to get some sleep, the last thing you want is to be disturbed by the sound of the engines or other passengers.

It also helps to block out these distractions and create a more peaceful environment for you to rest in. They can also help drown out the sound of crying babies or people talking loudly.

So if you’re looking for a way to make your plane trip more comfortable, noise-canceling earphones are a great option!

Get up and move around every hour or so to avoid getting stiff and cramped

I get cramps quite easily when sitting in the same position for many hours. So, staying active is important during long flights, as it helps keep your blood flowing and prevents stiffness and discomfort.

It’s also an excellent way to get your circulation going and avoid feeling cramped. So be sure to get up and walk around every few hours to keep yourself comfortable and healthy.

Bring an empty water bottle to fill up after going through the security

In many countries, especially in Europe, tap water is drinkable; if not, there are tons of water refilling stations in the airport where you can fill it up.

That said, one of the best plane hacks is to bring an empty refillable bottle with you. You can avoid buying overpriced water on the plane.

Instead, you can fill your bottle with water at the airport before your flight. This will save you money and help you stay hydrated during your journey.

Pack snacks and meals to avoid high airline prices

I get pretty snakish when I am bored and when I am flying long-haul flights, stuck in a vacuum machine for many hours, I certainly get bored and would like to have something to snack on.

So, packing snacks like I’ve written in this post about airplane snacks will make your flight much more enjoyable. Plus, if you’re not a huge fan of airplane food, knowing you have choices makes the experience better.

Next time you’re packing for a flight, including some snacks! They’ll help keep you feeling satisfied and comfortable during your journey.

Download movies, TV shows, or music to your device before your flight

Downloading movies, TV shows, and music before your flight is a great way to kill time and relax during your journey. Having something to focus on or listen to will make you less likely to get bored during the flight.

Additionally, downloading content in advance can save you money on in-flight entertainment. Some airlines charge for access to their entertainment systems, so downloading your content ahead of time is a great way to save some cash.

So if you’re looking for a way to make your next flight more comfortable and affordable, download some movies, TV shows, or music beforehand!

Bring a travel pillow for extra comfort

There are a few reasons why bringing a travel pillow on long flights is a good idea. First, they can help you get more comfortable and sleep better, and they can also help reduce the risk of getting a stiff neck or other aches and pains from sitting in the same position for hours.

And finally, they can make it easier to rest your head against the plane’s window without worrying about falling asleep.

So if you’re looking for a way to make your next long flight more comfortable, pack a travel pillow!

I personally have a fluffy neck pillow that I travel with everywhere in the world! I love it and can’t be without it traveling even by land.

Wear compression socks to avoid getting blood clots during long flights

Compression socks can help improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of developing blood clots during long flights. By wearing compression socks, you can help keep your legs feeling energized and comfortable throughout your journey.

Also, from my personal experience, compression socks also help avoid swelling and cramps during long flights and sitting in the same position for hours.

Bring a scarf or shawl over your head and shoulders to create a makeshift blanket

I can’t travel without a scarf! I always bring my huge scarf with me everywhere that also doubles as a blanket, gives extra warmth while waiting to be boarded, and as head protection if it is too sunny outside.

It is probably not a necessary thing to bring, but in all these years I’ve traveled, I always find ways to use it.

They are also useful during long land travel and if you need extra warmth while traveling somewhere during winter.

Bring a book or your kindle

books

I can’t ever travel the world without the company of my kindle. I could be away from my books but never my trusty ebook reader! It goes where I go because reading is an excellent use of my time, especially in idle moments like flying for long hours.

Having some entertainment during long flights is one of my top plane hacks! It gets boring fast if your flight is anywhere longer than 8 hrs, and being stuck for another 8 hrs with nothing to do can be excruciating.

Just bring your kindle or download the kindle app and buy a few books there just in case you decide you’d like to read.
