Serra de Tramuntana

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area has several small towns and villages where you can stop as you explore the route. These include Andratx, Puigpunyent, Esporles, Banyalbufar, Deià, Valldemossa, Fornalutx and Sóller.

Sóller

A charming town with a delightful main square, lovely cafés, and beautiful orange groves, Sóller is located a couple of kilometers from Port de Sóller.

A tourist favorite is the lovely vintage train journey from Palma to Sóller with scenic views along the route. It is one of the best things to do in Mallorca. You can also reach Sóller via the tunnel on the mountain route.

The town is famous for its orange and lemon groves as well as olives. It also has hiking trails and picturesque views of both the mountain and the sea.

La Cartuja de Valldemossa (Charterhouse/Monastery at Valldemossa)

Set amidst the scenic mountain range of the Serra de Tramuntana, Valldemossa’s main attraction is the Carthusian Monastery. Originally a royal residence, this site was converted into a monastery for Carthusian friars in the 15th century.

Today it is a museum, and the cells where the monks resided are now rented out to visitors. A must see here is two cells where the famous music composer and pianist Chopin and his lover George Sand (Aurore Dupín) stayed during a trip to Mallorca. It was here that Chopin composed some of his best works.

On your tour of the Charterhouse, you can visit the church, library, the prior’s quarters, pharmacy, and the Palace of King Sancho. The monastery is among the most exciting places to go in Mallorca.

Cap de Formentor

There are many places in Mallorca for those who love the outdoors. On your drive to Cap de Formentor from Port de Pollenca, you can see remarkable views of the landscape with its rock formations and the sea.

The route has winding roads so it can be a tricky drive. Stop at the Mirador des Colomer to see some superb views of an islet. You will be hypnotized by the beauty of nature in this area. Vertical rocky cliffs meet the sea in the dramatic landscape of Cap de Formentor.

The Formentor Lighthouse – the highest lighthouse in the Balearic islands – looks like a jewel in the crown amidst the rugged surroundings. Take in the views of the Pollenca and Alcudia bays. You can also stop by the Formentor beach.

Pine Walk – Port de Pollenca

Mallorca’s primary place of pilgrimage and a former monastery, the Santuari de Lluc in Escorca is nestled in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range. It all started when a shepherd discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary leading to the formation of the 13th century Lluc Sanctuary.

Today, you can also see the Shrine of Our Lady and a museum here. Take a look at the botanical gardens too. The sanctuary is famous for its choir that has members wearing blue and white cassocks. The cells at the monastery are rented out to visitors.

Bellver and Other Castles

An imposing circular castle, the Bellver Castle should make it to any list of what to see in Mallorca. Located in Palma, the castle is flanked by round towers and surrounded by a moat. Today, it is also the site of a History Museum.

The 14th-century Gothic style castle has two levels with lovely arches and a beautiful courtyard. You can see the exquisite design from the top of the roof along with gorgeous views of Palma Bay.

Another noteworthy castle/palace is the Palau de l’Almudaina, situated close to the Bellver Castle. You can also visit the Castle of Capdepera at Capdepera built in Gothic style with remnants of the original Moorish design.

Caves of Drach, and Arta

If mysterious caves with fabulous formations of stalactites interest you, make a trip to the Caves of Drach at Porto Cristo. Exploring the caves is one of the most thrilling Mallorca activities. Go on a guided tour in these limestone caves and admire the remarkable formations. The site also has a large underground lake – Lake Martel.

At the end of your journey, you will reach the lake where you can listen to a short concert by musicians on a boat! It’s truly captivating! You can also go on a boat ride on the lake.

The Caves of Arta at Capdepera too are captivating caverns with superb formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Located right next to the sea, these caverns also provide spectacular views of the outside.
