It is a cultural center and one of the best things to see in Kuhmo to know about its local Kalevala and Karelian culture.

The center educates the visitors based on different exhibitions, events, programs as well as cultural excursions to give them a detailed insight about Kuhmo.

The entire building is known as Juminkeko, which is a glorifying example of the urban wooden Finnish architecture. The building structure is guarded by 24 wooden pillars supporting the lingonberry and heather roof while the stairs leading to the entrance and the upper floors are made from trees. It is also called the prime heritage center of Kuhmo.

Hiidenportti National Park

It is the biggest tourist attraction in Kuhmo in the Kainuu region. It was established in 1982. The national park/sanctuary houses the ancient 100 to 150-year-old forests covering 45sq. Km area among which the coniferous forests cover two-third parts.

The forest loggings here date back to the ancient 20th century. The sanctuary has got its name from its stunning gully residing in the forest amidst gorgeous vertical cliffs.

The canyons of the forest look breathtaking accompanied by flowery meadows and wooden paths with the shimmery Porttijoki River flowing through it.

Some of the significant wildlife found here are – Brown bear, lynx, wolves, Beaver, Siberian Jay, Hazel grouse, great grey owl and many more.

Kalevala Village

Another best things to do in Kuhmo is exploring the Kalevala Village, It is one Kalevala Village is one of the adventurous Kuhmo sightseeing locations.

Located amidst the beautiful forest trails, the Village is an open-air museum openly showcasing its exotic Finnish structures.

It features wooden buildings, log huts, ancient log cabin, and the desk of Elias Lonnrot and different woodcarvings with artisan displays showcasing the Karelian folk culture.

There is an underground cave belonging to the dwarves. You can even visit it and try their special magic drink. The Village holds a special charm during Christmas when it’s crowded by Santa Claus and his troops celebrating Christmas with carols and workshops in a grand way.

It also houses the Pojhola House gallery representing Kavelian artistic works and a café.

Petola Luontokeskus

This is another beautiful nature center and sanctuary to visit in Kuhmo. It lies at a 3.5 km distance from central Kuhmo, giving you detailed information about the history, evolution, and lifestyle of massive carnivores like Bear, Lynx, eagles, wild reindeers, and Wolverine.

It features the Pedestrian Movement Exhibition to let you know about the carnivores as mentioned above in detail through images, exhibits, and lights and sound shows.

It also features a beautiful nature trail through the wilderness to compare your jumping power with the carnivores, read folklores about their birth, and even communicate with them without uttering a word. It is pure bliss for the wildlife lovers and holds a lot of excitement in the air.

Visiting the 1975 Tuupala Museum is among the best activities in Kuhmo to reach one step closer to its local culture. The exterior part of the museum has the architecture of a Karelian Farmhouse while the interior part showcases the lifestyle from the period of 1880 to 1960 when it used to be the residence of Kainulainen family.

The museum in its early years had been a hostelry, post office, pharmacy, diary before it became the museum.

The exhibits in the museum throw light on Kuhmo local traditions and history. The other two striking attractions of the museum are – The 50 years old Orthodox church housing the 18th-century exhibits by Valamo Monastery. And The 300-year-old Madonna Kuhmo Church is currently a Kuhmo music concert zone especially during its annual festival of Kuhmo Chamber Music.

This is a famous heritage destination in Kuhmo that speaks of its war history. It gives you a detailed overview of the vigorous Finnish-Soviet Winter War witnessed by Kuhmo in the era of 30 November 1939 to 13 March 1940.

You can find this museum just next to Hotel Kalevala in Kuhmo. It portraits all major events from the Finnish-Soviet war with different exhibit models, photographs, and sound effects.

The museum also displays you the life of the civilians and their problems during the war period in separate rooms having distinct themes like – Front-end service, Wound care, evacuation, fighting, life after peace, etc. The museum also houses the miniature display of Luelahti encirclement battles and Soviet planes.
