Planning to visit Hanko, Finland – a stunning summer coastal town in Southern Finland? Here’re my top tips when visiting this quaint piece of paradise!

In the summer of 2022, my partner and I made a Southern Finland road trip loop that took us from Tampere, Hämeenlinna, Espoo, Helsinki, Hanko, and then a quick trip to Turku. I’m not going to lie, Hanko has been my highlight the whole trip! I did not realize how much I missed out on all these years living in Finland by not exploring its southern villages.

I’ve always wanted to visit the southern part of Finland, especially Hanko for some reason, for the longest time as I had a few colleagues from these areas when I was living in Vaasa, and they’ve always told me how beautiful the archipelago is, especially in the summer.

It is also worth noting that many of Finland’s southern towns and villages have a strong Swedish influence, meaning you’ll probably hear many people speaking in Swedish. This did not surprise me as many local towns would often move to Vaasa (a city in northwest Finland with a strong Swedish-Finnish community) for an easier cultural transition.

Hanko is indeed one of these cities that spoke Swedish more than Finnish, and it is quite nostalgic for me as many of my Finnish friends growing up were Finn-Swedes, and I spent many years learning Swedish myself (unsuccessfully). Hanko has been at the back of my mind for years, so I’m happy to have finally visited it, even just for a short time!

We were in Hanko for a full day en route to Turku after hiking in Espoo and exploring Helsinki, so I’d like to share our highlights in this beautiful coastal town.

How to get to Hanko – A fantastic day trip from Helsinki!

We came to Hanko, Finland, by car as it was the most convenient way since we traveled to other parts of the country. That said, there are multiple other ways you can get to Hanko! If you’re coming from Helsinki, it is easiest to go by train or bus if you don’t have a car. The following transportation guide’s starting point will be from Helsinki (as I assume most travelers will be coming from there).

By car (most convenient)

There are two primary routes from Helsinki to Hanko, each offering benefits based on the time of day and traffic conditions. If you’re eager to reach Hanko swiftly, the E18 motorway, also known as the Turku Highway, is your best bet. This fast and direct route allows you to complete the 130-kilometer journey in just over an hour.

To embark on this adventure, begin by heading west on Länsiväylä road (Route 51) out of Helsinki, following signs for Turku. The E18 highway extends to Turku, so keep cruising until you spot the Hanko turnoff, approximately 20 kilometers before reaching Turku. From there, follow the signs to Hanko, and you’ll find yourself in the town center in no time.

By train

Your adventure starts at Helsinki Central Railway Station, situated in the bustling heart of Helsinki city. With excellent public transportation connections, reaching this station is a breeze. The next stop on your journey is Karjaa, where you may need to switch trains depending on your travel itinerary. From Karjaa, you will board another train bound for Hanko, your final destination.

Let’s delve into ticket prices and train frequency for this route. You’ll be pleased to know that trains from Helsinki to Hanko run frequently throughout the day. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, with one transfer at Karjaa. Ticket prices vary from €11 to €26 based on your travel class, and reserved seating may incur additional fees. If you plan to visit during the bustling summer season, I strongly recommend booking your ticket ahead of time to dodge overcrowded trains and inflated ticket prices.

By bus (cheapest)

The most reputable and frequent bus service on the Helsinki to Hanko route is Onnibus. With multiple daily departures, the trip takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, providing a convenient option for travelers.

Bus schedules vary depending on the day and time, with weekdays typically featuring 4-6 departures between 7 am and 8 pm. Weekend services may be slightly less frequent. It’s wise to consult the current timetable before planning your journey.

Let’s discuss ticket prices. One-way fares start at €9.99 when booked well in advance but can rise to €20 or closer to the travel date. Early booking is advised for the best rates.

The bus ride from Helsinki to Hanko offers a picturesque journey along Finland’s southern coast, showcasing breathtaking views of the Finnish Archipelago and the Baltic Sea. Notable landmarks en route include Lohja, Karjaa, Tammisaari, and Hanko. Look for historical sites such as Hanko railway station, Lohja Church, and the captivating Tulliniemi nature reserve.

To purchase your Onnibus ticket, visit their website or mobile app. You’ll receive an e-ticket to print or display on your phone. The bus stop in Helsinki is located at Kamppi bus station, easily accessible in the city center. Look for the Onnibus sign and consult information boards for your departure point. Arrive 15-20 minutes early to ensure a smooth boarding process.

Have your e-ticket and ID (if needed) ready for the driver, who will scan your ticket and assist with seating arrangements.

Here are three of Hanko’s top beaches to explore during your next Finnish getaway:

Bellevue Beach: Situated east of Plagen, Bellevue is a shallow, serene beach with three beach huts and a portable toilet. When planning your trip, note that locals select their beaches based on wind direction, as sea temperatures may vary. Bellevue and Tulliniemi beaches provide amenities such as changing huts and toilets, while Hangöby features a bathing hut for people with disabilities, making it an excellent option for visitors with specific needs.

Visit Bengtskär

Bengtskär, the southernmost island in the Archipelago Sea, lies 30 kilometers southwest of Hanko. With its exceptional geographical and historical significance, cultural attractions, and natural beauty, Bengtskär is an essential destination on any Finnish journey.

The island’s centerpiece is the Nordic countries’ tallest lighthouse, soaring 52 meters above the sea. The House of the Four Winds

Nestled atop beach cliffs in Hanko, the legendary Neljän Tuulen Tupa, or House of the Four Winds, has captivated visitors with its rich history and charm since the early 1900s.

Initially, a quaint wooden cafeteria, Mannerheim, Finland’s former president, owned the House of the Four Winds from 1927 to 1933. Despite its long-standing presence, the establishment continues to enchant guests with mouthwatering cakes and pastries prepared in-house.

Deriving its Finnish name from the powerful winds that occasionally sweep through the area, this beautiful building remains unfazed by the elements. Visitors can enjoy the expansive summer terrace and even a cozy sandy beach.
